A travel destination for the last 120 years.
Catalina Island may be best known for its exciting daytime adventures, but an eclectic dining scene makes it a must-visit from sunup to sundown. Whether you’re looking for casual bites in between activities, the full fine-dining experience or anything in between, one of Catalina’s hospitable venues will gladly accommodate your appetite.
Two of Catalina’s most popular eateries are conveniently located right in the island’s main hub of Avalon. Avalon Grille enjoys a close proximity to the beach, with an upscale but relaxed atmosphere overlooking the bay. New American cuisine and regional dishes prepared with a seasonal approach await you, each perfectly paired with a world-class selection of wines, microbrew beers and specialty cocktails. The restaurant also offers lunch daily and breakfast on weekends only, with happy hour daily from 4 to 6 p.m.
Just down Casino Way, Descanso Beach Club serves up open-air ambience reminiscent of beach cafés along the Mediterranean. Enjoy a delicious lunch alfresco, two popular beachside bars, fire rings on the beach and incredible views. Guests may also reserve cabanas and chaise rentals for a unique, bayside dining experience. And don’t miss their specialty summer cocktails for a bit of midday refreshment.
Opening in the fall of 2014, Ben’s Bakery, fondly named after Catalina’s most famous sea lion, is sure to be a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Located at the Shops at Atwater in Avalon, the café will offer gourmet pastries and specialty sandwiches freshly made each morning. Menu favorites include freshly baked breads and pastries, fresh-squeezed juices, gourmet coffees and grab-and-go sandwiches, wraps and salads. Ben’s Bakery will be the go-to spot for weddings, birthdays and celebrations on the island, as the bakers at Ben’s welcome custom orders and create beautiful and delicious specialty cakes.
Two Harbors, on the island’s West End, boasts its own share of first-class dining options. The menu at Harbor Reef Restaurant features locally caught fish alongside steak, chicken, ribs and prime rib. The “South Seas casual” establishment offers daily specials, including its signature fresh swordfish.
Located just off the docks between Harbor Reef Restaurant and Two Harbors General Store, West End Galley offers a wide variety of breakfast and lunch entrées, including freshly baked cinnamon rolls, coffee, breakfast burritos, freshly made sandwiches, a generous selection of burgers, pizzas, specialty salads and wraps. Dine in or pick up a tasty treat to take back to your boat, rental cottage, campsite or picnic on the beach.
Speaking of picnics, Isthmus Picnic Sites might be the best place to enjoy your takeout lunch. Pick up some extra goodies at Two Harbors General Store and enjoy your meal with a view of bobbing boats on the harbor.
The party goes on after sunset, with DJs, live music and a bustling bar scene. Saturday nights enjoy menu specials and live mixes at “After Hours” at Avalon Grille from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., or catch a first-run movie in the art deco elegance of The Avalon Theatre. Shows run nightly at 7:30 p.m., with matinees Wednesdays and Saturdays at 4:30 p.m.
Over in Two Harbors, Harbor Reef Saloon is the place to be. Enjoy dancing under the stars on the Harbor Reef patio most weekends from Memorial Day through October.
