Beach Cities Orthopedics & Sports Medicine was established in 2008 as a long time dream of Partners Dr. William Mealer and Dr. Brad Thomas. “We believe quality healthcare should be available for everyone, regardless of type of insurance or history,” Dr. Mealer explains. “We created Beach Cities Orthopedics so patients could come to one place for all their orthopedic needs.” Adds Dr. Thomas, “There aren’t too many places out there where you can see the doctor, get an MRI and receive your results within the same visit. To us, this is what premier orthopedic care is all about!” Not only does BCO serve the community as a one-stop orthopedic center, it is one of their core values to relate to the community as partners and friends. “It is important for patients to have a doctor who is on their team and understands what they are going through,” says Dr. Thomas. “We are all athletes who have battled our own injuries, and we treat each patient as we would want to be treated.”
HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY
On any given Friday night and Saturday during the fall you can be sure to find the BCO docs at a football game or two. The practice is committed to the health of young athletes, and thus donates their time as doctors for local high school and college football programs. “We treat any injuries that occur during the games, and see many of our student athletes for free if they can’t afford medical care,” explains Dr. Thomas. In addition to the football programs, BCO is a huge supporter of many local South Bay organizations like Dig 4 Kids, The Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation and Kiwanis Club.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN, WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT WORK?
Most of the BCO family is in orthopedics because of their love of sports, and that is where you can find many staff members on their time off. Not only was Dr. Thomas an NCAA All-American Swimmer and Water Polo player at UCSD, he is now an avid paddleboarder who took 1st place in the Catalina Classic this past August. If you visit a local beach on the weekends, you could run into Dr. Stephenson where he has been an LA County Lifeguard for over 15 years. Dr. Mealer is also a waterman, enjoying sailing on the weekends. Drs Ahn & Rogers are big winter sport athletes, skiing & snowboarding the fresh powder from the local mountains. Dr Rogers escapes to her home state of Utah to enjoy the mountains of Park City, Deer Valley & The Canyons. Dr Rogers is also the resident baller- the former University of Utah basketball All-American, likes to show off her skills on the court!
