Dr. Howard Murad, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Murad Inclusive Health Medical Group, has a unique philosophy: he doesn’t treat a disease or a condition—he treats an entire person. Dr. Murad’s practice uses a full complement of treatment modalities, including Eastern, Western, conventional and alternative, to make dramatic changes in the appearance of patients’ skin, reduce weight, lower blood pressure and increase self-esteem. In practice for more than 30 years, Dr. Murad is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (FAAD), a pharmacist and the holder of 18 dermatology-related patents. He is the author of three best-selling anti-aging books, including his latest release, The Water Secret: The Cellular Breakthrough to Look and Feel 10 Years Younger.

What would you like potential patients to know about you?

“A healthy complexion is a reflection of total wellness, both inside and out. Skincare can lead the way to overall health by using the right products, ingesting the proper nutrients (from both food and supplements) and making positive lifestyle choices. If I look at the patient as a whole and their skin concerns as a probable symptom of a larger wellness issue, this whole-body—or what I call “Inclusive”–approach yields much better results.”

Was there a defining moment in your career that guided you to where you are now?

“I have been an avid hiker for years. I would take a water bottle with me on my hikes but was still constantly feeling dehydrated. I began experimenting with different ways to quench my thirst—including eating raw fruits and vegetables like apples, cucumbers and watermelon. As I did this, I noticed I wasn’t feeling as dehydrated as when I just drank water. I began testing my theory on subjects, and sure enough, ‘eating water’ kept their thirst quenched significantly longer. The ‘eat your water’ theory was the springboard to my research into The Science of Cellular Water®—research that has revealed that the ability of cell membranes to hold water as the fundamental marker of youthful good health. All of Murad’s retail and professional skincare products are formulated based upon this research.”

What is your passion?

“Painting! It’s a hobby I just picked up a few years ago, but it has quickly become one of my favorites. My pieces are abstract, in bright, cheerful colors. I proudly display many of my original works at the Murad corporate headquarters and at my medical practice. I often say, ‘Find your passion,’ and I’m so lucky to say I have found mine.”

How do you give back to your community?

“At Murad, we are committed to the health of our customers, our community and our world. We contribute to hundreds of local charities through donations, silent auction items, gift baskets and more. Each October, I host The Art of Giving, a public charity art show where more than 30 pieces of my art are donated and auctioned off. All of the money raised from each piece sold at the event is donated to the charity of the buyer’s choice. Additionally, this year my daughter, son, nephew and I formed the Murad Family Foundation with the goal of advancing the health of Southern California’s children by expanding access to fitness and nutrition education.”

What’s one trend that is changing or defining your specialty today?

“I see the future of skincare moving toward an Inclusive Health approach. With health care as it is today, preventing disease and aging, or ‘youth building’ as I like to call it, is key. When I first started my career in the beauty and wellness industry, people believed that they could solely apply a topical cream and their skin concerns, whether those were blemishes, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation or another concern, would disappear. However, I found that this method alone was not always giving my patients the optimal results they were looking for. This Inclusive approach, coupled with my scientific research into The Science of Cellular Water®, is a new way for all skincare professionals to look at their patients and determine the best plan that includes topical, internal and emotional care to benefit the patient’s needs. Thankfully today, more and more doctors and healthcare professionals are taking a whole-person approach to target not only skincare issues but the root of the problem caused by internal and external factors.”
