As we’re all dreaming of our next getaway, a local historical gem has been busy refreshing their rooms and restaurant to welcome us to the beach for our next staycation, corporate gathering or romantic dinner date. A touchstone in the South Bay community since 1965, The Portofino Hotel & Marina now boasts a fresh new vibe following a property-wide renovation and a new focus on health and wellness.

Opened in 1962 as The Portofino Inn, the property became a hangout for well-known race car drivers, thanks to owner Mary Davis’ enthusiasm for the sport. The Cannonball Run, a race from New York to Los Angeles, was first held in 1971 with The Portofino Inn as its final destination. Mary named the resort for the Italian seacoast town of Portofino, and to this day guests admire the hotel for its coastal, Mediterranean flavor.

Today The Portofino’s niche in local history intertwines with its modern offerings to lure guests to the King Harbor enclave. Updates abound throughout the property, including a new lobby, renovated Living Room lobby lounge, refreshed guest rooms and baths, and a renovated 8,000-square-foot conference center.

As part of its commitment to health and wholeness, the resort debuted the Dockside Adventure Center to encourage outdoor recreation. In partnership with renowned brand REI, this watersports activity outlet offers customized water activity tours where guests can rent stand-up paddleboards, single and tandem kayaks, and beach cruiser bikes. The new Adventure Center also provides a selection of healthy takeaway food, beverage options and sundries. Other wellness options include a pool with Pacific views, yoga on the beach and the Seaside Lagoon Trail—a relaxing stroll along the harbor channel.

For guests looking for activities and entertainment that are a bit more leisurely, BALEENkitchen and BALEENlounge are known for their light mood and serious food. Marina views and firepits provide a romantic backdrop for eclectic dining options and craft cocktails. The Living Room Bar boasts sweeping views of the Pacific, updated furnishings and décor, craft cocktails and an exciting schedule of events.

The Portofino Hotel & Marina is surrounded by tropical landscapes and spectacular views of Palos Verdes, Catalina Island and the Pacific Ocean. Its King Harbor location offers front-row viewing of a colony of sea lions frolicking in their natural habitat. The pet-friendly retreat allows guests to unwind and curate their own adventure—whether high-energy or low-key.

Spacious guestrooms with private balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows capture the casual elegance and breathtaking scenery. A 181-slip harbor marina, 24-hour business center and apartments offering full-time residence are just part of why Condé Nast named the resort a 2019 Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Award recipient. The Portofino Hotel & Marina is a welcoming setting for weddings, business meetings and leisure travelers looking for a retreat following a day of sun and sand.
