MY HEALTH: Mia Nicole Mason
17, Manhattan Beach, Student
How I keep in shape:
I keep in shape by playing indoor and beach volleyball. I also lift weights, do plyos at the beach, run on The Strand and hike trails in Tucson, Arizona, with my family.
What keeps me motivated:
Competing and playing volleyball alongside some of my best friends and having the opportunity to play college volleyball. But most of all, my parents.
My health challenges:
Almost five years ago I was diagnosed with brain cancer and underwent surgery and radiation treatment. I had to learn how to walk again, and I lost most of my strength. But today I am 100% cancer-free and
stronger than ever.
My biggest achievement:
Two of my biggest achievements are being named to the Girls Volleyball Junior Olympic All-Tournament Team just two years after my cancer diagnosis and winning the CIF State Championship in 2012 with my Marymount High School volleyball team.
Words of wisdom:
“Do what you gotta do so you can do what you wanna do.”
