Not Another Tie

Honor thy father with quality time.

We adore our dads, but somehow Father’s Day is often celebrated with an uninspired gift—a bottle of wine, a golf shirt or maybe a gift certificate from Amazon. And then there’s the tie. Why not skip the gift this year and make a memory instead? Here are some ideas for quality time with Dad.

ONE

Take him to the Santa Monica Airport for an exhilarating tour in an open-cockpit, two-seat biplane. Fly up the coast, over the Palos Verdes Peninsula, or inland to the Hollywood Sign and back. Taxiing up the tarmac is almost as fun as the flight: you get a behind-the-scenes peek at the private jets in the hangers of the rich and famous. TWO

Head out onto the blue with Dad on a stand-up paddle board. Kevin Williams started South Bay Paddlesurf after he became hooked on the activity in 2006, losing pounds and feeling years younger. Help Pop turn back the clock and schedule a two-person private lesson. 310-480-8574, southbaypaddlesurf.com

THREE

It may sound cliché, but nothing beats a round of golf on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Schedule a tee time at one of the first-class courses here in the South Bay, like Trump National or Los Verdes Golf Club. He won’t be disappointed.
