Perfect Medley

Since 1936, members of lifeguard services throughout Southern California have gathered at sunset for the Judge Irving Taplin Medley Relay. Under special lights near the Hermosa Beach Pier, these friendly competitors test their endurance in a race that consists of two runners, four swimmers, four paddlers, one surf ski paddler and four two-person dories. The result: 40-minutes of pure adrenaline and sustained excitement … pushing even the fittest lifeguard to his or her physical limits. This year, a team from Victoria, Australia competed against our lifeguards. the winning team, LA County Central Section “A,” got the honor of holding the “Taplin Bell” perpetual trophy until the following year’s race.

“Taplin is a time to share in the community and lineage of our profession. I see people at taplin I don’t get to see all year. I want to beat them, but more importantly, I want to perpetuate the spirit and soul of Lifeguarding.”

“I remember watching the event as a kid and never would have imagined participating in it or winning it.”
