Dave King started his real estate career with South Bay Brokers, and when Sotheby’s bought the brokerage in 2015 he continued with the firm. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Penn State University and worked as a music teacher and football coach. He then worked as a television actor and host on QVC—where he logged more than 14,000 hours of live television and sold more than $1 billion in merchandise! Today Dave is a Realtor who occasionally works on television. He is a husband, a father of three and a member of the board of directors of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.


Do you have a motto that you follow in your real estate career?

“I firmly believe that ‘Who tells your story matters.’ We all have stories, and one of the things I love most about my work as a Realtor is telling my clients’ stories or that of their homes. Buying or selling a home is an emotional, life-changing event. Sellers and buyers want the best price, but sellers also want the buyers to love their home as much as they do. As your listing Realtor, it is my job to help potential buyers see the value you place on your home beyond dollars and cents—because it is a part of the fabric of your life. As your buying Realtor, it is my job to encourage sellers to see you as more than just another offer. I will show them who you are and why selling their home to you is the best decision they can possibly make! I am committed to telling your story with exemplary style.”


What areas do you specialize in?

“The vast majority of my business is in the Beach Cities—Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo—but because of my network within the entertainment industry, combined with the extraordinary global reach of Sotheby’s, my business is truly national in nature.”


What do you love most about your job?

“When we were kids, my mother always told us that dreams DO come true. And they do! As a Realtor, I get to help a dream home become a reality for my clients. There is nothing like seeing the sheer joy clients feel when they take possession of their new home—a home where memories will be made, holidays celebrated and many of life’s biggest goals achieved. It’s the best!”


What are key factors for finding a good fit when choosing a realtor to work with?

“When you are choosing a Realtor to help you buy or sell a home, it is important to know that you are choosing an advocate in every way—a fighter, a listener, an advisor, a negotiator and your voice throughout the escrow and beyond. Having told thousands of stories on live television, I consider myself a master storyteller. Your story—your needs, wants and aspirations—is in excellent hands.”


Do you anticipate a time when every property will feature a virtual home tour?

“I do. Real estate, just like every other industry, has become increasingly tech-driven, and the pandemic has exacerbated that fact. With inventory at a very low level, many buyers are seeking homes based on the features they really want—even if these homes are further from the ‘ideal’ location for them. With so many people working remotely, commute times are often less important, and buyers can view their chosen properties from the comfort of their smartphone or home computer. The properties with virtual home tours are typically seen by more potential buyers. As a seller you are able to highlight unique features of your home with the tour, which sets your home apart, as well as target specific types of buyers.”

Speak about the level of flexibility required to be successful in the real estate industry.

“There is ‘structured flexibility’ in real estate. It is of the utmost importance to be there when your client needs you, either via phone or in person, but it is equally important to be there for your family or your commitments outside real estate. I do my very best to let my clients know ahead of time when I am not going to be available or on vacation or doing work other than real estate. That said, I am always available via text.”


Do you think home prices will continue to soar in 2022?

“The combination of limited inventory and historically low mortgage rates created a highly volatile market, and understandably the prices of homes soared in 2021. While there are a lot of buyers who are waiting for a correction in the market, prices will continue to rise through 2022—according to the economic trends that I have read—even though interest rates will continue to rise.”
