Konni Tanaka Interior Design

Describe the project.

This spectacular new home by Tomaro architects is built for a wonderful young family who deeply appreciate classic design. Louis Tomaro created a beautiful façade of public rooms with arched doorways opening to an expansive ocean view. We designed luxurious drapery of Cowtan & Tout textiles to frame the arched doors, with wallpaper livening up the walls.

Mixing bright, bold, classic motifs and modern art, we achieved a vibrant energy throughout the home. In the living room, artwork—including a Takashi Murakami print—is displayed in a traditional setting, while across the grand entry foyer a modern dining setting is centered in a classic wallpapered room.

The soaring 25-foot-high entry foyer’s circular ceiling holds a 7-foot-diameter chandelier of crystal and Murano glass. This and the dining room chandelier were made by an Italian company whose chandeliers grace public halls and residences throughout Europe. On a sunny day, the crystals create a delightful burst of rainbows across the walls.

How can we add touches from faraway places to our living spaces?

Items from special lands—some with historical stories—add to any décor. They breathe personality into our homes, connecting us to places and people by weaving us into their stories. Wall-  hung traditional textiles, as well as furniture and lighting featuring traditional details, add a subtle touch of exoticism. Wall finishes can evoke the atmosphere of faraway places, creating a setting for furniture or décor from the region. Plants native to the region or locally made planters are a great way to reflect a geographical location.

What kitchen trends are you seeing?

We see demand for items that are big on function and statement. Some clients opt for colored appliances in colors like yellow or black. Steam ovens, modular cooktops, 20,000 BTU wok burners and workstation sinks are all popular. To house their appliances, our clients are delighted to have appliance cabinets and hideaway coffee bars. For wine lovers, wine walls are an epitome of function and beauty.

Tell us about your firm

We are passionate about helping people have unique, fulfilling lives through the use and enjoyment of their homes. After defining our clients’ desires, styles and budgets, we collaborate with them, designing millwork, lighting, furniture and window treatments. Backlit stone, hand-hewn stone and metals are possible finishes for statement features. For furnishings we have turnkey décor packages to reduce time and expense, as well as custom furnishings for specific designs. In all projects, we strive for a design that keenly reflects our clients’ lifestyles and personalities.
