Describe the featured project.
The project is a total remodel of a mid-century home that was built in 1960 and occupied by the original owners until 2015. It also happens to be my own home. My wife and I were very excited to purchase this property, as there were multiple offers. We assured the former owner we would get the great “bones” this home had but bring it into the future as far as design, comfort and efficiency.
The house was stripped to the studs, the kitchen enlarged, rooms rearranged and all new finishes installed. A pool and other outdoor spaces were added to a once overgrown yard. In 2019 a new master bathroom addition was added. The end result is what we call “Palm Springs glam”! It’s a fun space that makes you feel like you’re on vacation every time you come home.
Tell us about your firm and the services you offer.
We primarily are a construction company, but we help clients create a team by recommending architects or designers who will fit well with the owners’ desires. We also do design-build work in-house. With a team approach, we can better manage costs, schedule and desires for our clients. We also have many of the needed trades in-house, so there is no need to wait for a subcontractor to have an opening in their schedule to get to our job.
Tell us about some other properties you’re currently working on.
We are very multidimensional. Today we worked on a large home in Manhattan Beach that is a traditional coastal home, a Spanish home near Torrance Beach, a Tuscan house overlooking Trump Golf Course and a Neutra home in Palos Verdes Estates. We have experience in all types of architecture.
When did you start your business in the South Bay?
I started my company in 1981 while a business student at USC. Doing small jobs through college helped pay for tuition. After school I worked in the private sector for a few years, but I always yearned to be working for myself doing something creative. In 1988 I started Zigrang Construction by myself. Over the years as we grew, we took on more and more employees. Some of these people are still with us after all these years.
We are proud that we have created an environment where our employees care as much as I do how our projects run and completed. We believe each project is special, and these buildings are going to be around for a long time with our name attached.
