The South Bay has a reputation for promoting a lifestyle of health and fitness. With easy access to outdoor activities and plentiful sports and recreational pastimes for all ages, life in the Beach Cities revolves around getting out and about as often as possible. So when a nagging pain or unexpected injury slows us down, we need a solution to get us back on our feet—one that’s fast and effective.

For generations, Coastal Ortho (formerly Torrance Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Group) has provided South Bay families with comprehensive, advanced orthopedic care. The group’s physicians, board-certified in orthopedics and orthopedic surgery, have helped thousands of patients recover from ailments of the foot and ankle, hand, shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and spine, and get back to the life activities they enjoy—without pain and discomfort.

With more than 160 years of combined medical experience, these doctors are experts at sports medicine and specialize in minimally invasive services, including total joint replacement. For those suffering from severe arthritis or other serious musculoskeletal injuries, total joint replacement may be the ideal solution. Doctors remove unhealthy joint cartilage and replace it with an artificial joint designed to look and function just the like natural one.

Orthopedic surgeon Todd Shrader, MD, is a joint specialist and has a reputation for being the “total joint guy” at Coastal Ortho. A Southern California native, he worked alongside his father, Dr. Richard Shrader, who was also known as the “total joint guy” for 10 years here in the South Bay.

One of Dr. Todd Shrader’s preferred medical techniques is the unique direct anterior approach for total hip replacement, which uses a small incision and preserves hip muscles and tendons—allowing a quicker recovery. His knee replacement surgery includes partial and total knee replacement through a subvastus approach, which avoids cutting into the quadriceps tendon. In addition, he also performs the MAKOplasty—a robotic-assisted procedure that allows for more precision of the joint replacement and balances the soft tissue for a better outcome.

“Patients of all ages benefit from our procedures because they greatly reduce their recovery time, pain and scarring,” says Dr. Shrader. “If your quality of life is altered and you’re missing out on activities due to a bad hip or knee, don’t wait!”

And now another total joints expert has joined the ranks at Coastal Ortho. A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Kwesi St. Louis, MD, moved to New Jersey with his family when he was 19. He earned his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine before embarking on an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in adult total joint reconstruction surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where he learned advanced techniques in both primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. Dr. St. Louis is looking forward to building long-lasting relationships in the South Bay community.

It is those relationships with patients that inspired the Coastal Ortho team to expand into their second location in 2017 and change their business name to reflect their expansive patient base throughout the Beach Cities. Located in El Segundo, this second office allows the practice—founded 40 years ago—to continue to grow and better serve patients throughout the South Bay while having a stronger presence in that localized area.

Caring for their patients’ total well-being, Coastal Ortho offers several treatment options to ease patients’ stress while receiving care. At the original Torrance office, the on-site aquatic therapy center provides comprehensive pool therapy to patients of all ages—from toddlers to centenarians—to promote movement with less pain than standard therapy. One of the only practices in the South Bay that features aquatic therapy, Coastal Ortho combines the healing properties of water and traditional physical therapy to assist with rehabilitation.

Aquatic therapy exercises muscles underwater with light resistance, increasing the range of motion, balance, and improving strength and function. The HydroWorx pool, featuring an underwater treadmill, is heated to 90º to promote muscle relaxation and increase blood flow to the joints.

At the same location, the peaceful MRI Suite features a state-of-the-art wide-bore MRI, offering patients quick and accurate diagnoses in a relaxing environment. Unlike older, closed models, an wide-bore MRI machine helps reduce feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety—another way the practice makes medical care as pleasant as possible.

The Coastal Ortho family is a team of people who love the South Bay—many of them born and raised here. While they are all active in the coastal lifestyle, there is always a doctor available to care for patients—24 hours a day. Pursuing clients’ health is the passion of each member of the Coastal Ortho team. They help South Bay residents get back to doing what they love and enjoying a full, active lifestyle.
