Accessible luxury, serene quiet, unparalleled views of Catalina and the Pacific … these are only a few reasons why Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes shines as the jewel of the South Bay. Positioned on a seaside bluff once occupied by Marineland, this prime peninsula real estate serves the resort and its guests well, offering plenty of beautiful territory to roam (102 acres in all) and access to the area’s natural treasures, sea to shore.
Though the elegant Mediterranean architecture of Terranea appears years in the making, the resort was completed in 2009 with an eco-friendly design approach honoring the natural integrity of its surroundings. With the ocean as a backdrop, accommodations at the resort invite the elements indoors, from the well-appointed guest suites to the private, Bungalows, Casitas, and Villas.
Amenities abound, including plush linens, spacious bathrooms and intimate balconies and patios. Enchanted evenings are best spent cuddled around one of Terranea’s glowing firepits, 225 resort-wide. So comfortable are the accommodations, you may not want to leave your piece of heaven … though we strongly suggest you do. Terranea is more than a great resort. This destination excels as an all-inclusive experience.
If you have stayed at the resort in the past, you will notice new additions tailored to enhance each guest’s visit. Golf lovers will enjoy The Links Golf Academy, designed to help both pros and amateurs improve their game on Terranea’s award-winning 9-hole, par 3 course. Adding to the pleasure of a round of golf on The Links’ picturesque green will be a new clubhouse, coming soon.
Spa enthusiasts should indulge in The Bungalows at Terranea, a collection of three-, five- and seven-night rejuvenating experiences that include indoor and outdoor fitness training, luxury spa treatments, healthy dining and accommodations in the relaxing Bungalows. Rejuvenation at it’s finest.
Terranea also prides itself on being a family-friendly resort, with an array of amazing activities for kids and teens to do solo or with their parents. Stop by Pointe Discovery for a menu of adventures, from whale watching and kayak tours to scenic hikes and horseback riding. And don’t worry if you didn’t pack the appropriate attire; both Pointe Discovery and marea boutique offer apparel and accessories for any Terranea occasion—day to evening and everything in between.
For a different kind of adventure, take your palate on a delicious journey through the resort’s unique dining venues. Casual fare, coffees and quick bites abound at sea beans near the resort entrance. Manhattan Beach Creamery recently teamed up with the resort, bringing the sweet and frosty Manhattan Beach favorite to Palos Verdes. Or, you can sample one of sea bean’s homemade gelatos and pastries with a delicious cup of freshly brewed coffee.
Both the eclectic Catalina Kitchen and Asian-inspired bashi serve lunch and dinner daily with al fresco dining in the exceptionally beautiful weather. Take in a gorgeous Pacific sunset at Nelson’s, the resort’s go-to for beer, burgers and more. Check out the memorabilia from the resort’s days as a filming location for the television show Sea Hunt.
The most romantic rendezvous happen at mar’sel, mixing fine European technique with the flavors of Californian cuisine for dazzling results. Modern, organic and local, the food is fresh and forward-thinking with excellent flavors, and there are wonderful wines to accompany the meal. Cap off your evening with a cocktail (or two) at the Lobby Bar and enjoy conversation and the warmth of a glowing fire pit.
Even if you think you know Terranea, we argue plenty of reasons to make a speedy return. Not only does this exceptional resort surprise us each season with a new collection of events, amenities and adventures, the inherent beauty of the property matched with first-class hospitality and service is enough to warrant a weekend visit, now and forever.
