The photography of Jeff Berting frequently graces the pages of Southbay magazine and Southbay HOME, but many don’t know his artistic talents are not limited to the lens. Turns out Jeff often moonlights in woodcraft, a hobby he picked up from his grandfather as a kid.

“Woodworking really didn’t start in for me until I bought my home and started remodeling while my wife was pregnant,” he says. “My son’s crib was one of the first more elaborate pieces I did.”

Jeff finds inspiration in the work of George Nakashima and Sam Maloof, two craftsmen he believes to own a great design sense. “With so much of our modern lives being digital and having an undo button available, I really love the design and problem-solving aspect of it,” shares Jeff. “It’s all about finding that balance of form and function.”

The piece pictured is a custom creation for the editor of this magazine—a monkey pod coffee table and centerpiece of his living room. All of Jeff’s pieces are custom and based on availability of materials. For more, contact him at 310-977-7370 or [email protected]
