In October of last year, Tiffany & Co., the classic name in jewelry and tableware, officially offered its customers the opportunity to design custom porcelain with the esteemed Atelier Le Tallec.

One of the oldest and most celebrated porcelain studios in Paris, the atelier produces hand-painted porcelains painstakingly crafted according to strict rules dating back hundreds of years. Tiffany found Atelier Le Tallec to be an extension of its own standards of quality and innovation, and commissioned the studio to produce a collection of 20 hand-painted china designs exclusively for Tiffany & Co.

The design process into creating each beautiful, hand painted piece requires meticulous attention to detail and an eye for artistry. First, the design is traced in pencil on the porcelain. Next, a poncif drawing (a sort of tracing paper) is applied and pricked with a pin to indicate the contour of the pattern. Before a brushstroke is applied, unleaded pigments are carefully blended with pine oil and turpentine to achieve the precise color. Each piece is then fired in a kiln approximately three or four times depending on the color sequence. It can take up to ten full hours of hand labor to decorate a single piece of china. With the exacting firing schedule, the atelier needs up to eight full days to finish each piece. Gold is used on all designs for lining or highlighting and is the last pigment to be applied. Finally, each piece is initialed by the painter and dated.

Tiffany & Co. customers are invited to meet with a sales representative to first discuss design ideas for their custom porcelain. The concepts will be sent to the atelier and samples are created for customer approval. As production takes approximately six to eight months to complete, they estimate the entire process will take about a full year. In this writer’s opinion, a wait worth having an exquisite Tiffany table setting that is entirely your own.
