Two different patio settings anchored by the same bench

Los Angeles–based interior designer Kristi Nelson, founder of KMNelson Design, LLC, creates two entirely different outdoor looks using one bench. “They show the versatility of classic design,” says Kristi of the two patio designs she conceived. “I’m a classicist, so I love showing people why certain designs and things stand the test of time. Classics can be worked into almost any situation and don’t have to be used as is. Painting this bench blue instead of leaving it natural gives it a completely new—and unsubdued—personality.”[vc_single_image image=”58782″ img_size=”full”]
“By keeping the color scheme black and white, it’s all about lines on lines on lines, which has energy without being overwhelming,” says Kristi, who is busy working on a Cape Cod-style residence in Palos Verdes Estates. “The whole group will stand out in the best way in any contemporary patio or garden setting.”

“The Lutyens bench is inherently bohemian. Its signature scrolling seat back directly references his time in India, so it was natural to play that theme and show how easily it fits into a relaxed, loose, very casual seating area. SoCal is so much about coastal living, and making a big blue statement was a fun color play. Painting the bench blue adds punch and takes it out of the norm. The curves of the back are really beautiful and have a very bohemian vibe, so adding the accents that play that up make something that seems stiff and old-fashioned, cool and different.”
